Philips – tools, services and building blocks

The Light Emitting Diode has caused a profound change within the lighting industry. This is due to the LED’s key properties of being digitally controllable, physically small, highly efficient and cheap to manufacture.  For outdoor lighting the LED is particularly beneficial for being highly energy efficient and simple to maintain due to its long lifespan. Furthermore, due to the variety of colors available they are often used for city beautification to illuminate buildings and places of public and national interest.

Most city lighting projects are one-of-a-kind, using unique tools, technology and methods, making it difficult to transfer the results or learnings from one project to another; consequently, a city can have multiple disparate installations.  As this domain is evolving with many new projects being commissioned, there is now a greater need to connect installations together and encourage better integration into a city’s ecosystem.  This will require a new set of design tools, services and technology building blocks (software, hardware, user interaction, etc.) to simplify the creation of media architectures and installations that can work individually or as a collective when needed. The goal of this workshop is to explore what this tool set may consist of and to initiate collaboration beyond the actual event with a likeminded community.

The first part of the workshop will be dedicated to determining the future architectural directions and trends that will impact the necessary design freedom for media architectures, as well as analyzing a few use-cases to identify what tools are currently used and what their issues and shortcomings may be.

In the second half of the workshop, the results from the morning’s discussion will be used as a starting point for a co-creation session to build prototypes to visualize our ideas on the type of tools needed for designing future interactive lighting architecture.
